Or they are trying to be, anyway.

I started some socks aka magic loop method, but I just didn't like them. I'll give that method a rest & try again in a few months - it seems the second time is a charm for me learning things in knitting, if I give it a rest in between time. Of course it was easy enough to learn magic loop, I just didn't like it. So I'm not sure this method works.

Still making crusoe socks, but haven't really done anything with them other than the toes!

Well, I finally tried the magic loop method - and, I don't think I like it. I think I'm going to give up for now.

Almost done those magic stripes socks - I'm trying to make them knee highs with some creative usage of yarn/leftovers/odd balls that match the colors in the socks.

I started another pair of broadripples out of some handpainted yarn from knit picks, but, I don't like how huge they looked. I frogged back to the end of the toes at about the 64 stitch mark instead of 72 stitch mark, and I think I'll make crusoe's instead.

Samantha Fixation for circulars

Diagonal Fixation Pattern

||Naida's Crochet||

Two different socks here - a pair of leftover socks (until the heel using the crazy 8's pattern; after the heel turn until the ribbing is done, I just did straight st st & ribbing at the end, changing colors when I felt like it :) though I changed sock yarns at the same time on each sock. THe other pair is made with sockotta yarn in size 2. I thought they were going to be tight on me every time I tried them on, they had 56 stitches on them & 2 by 2 ribbing all the way from the toes on up. I decided to end the sock where I did & was going to frog them & chalk it up to experience (this pair was one of the first pairs I started knitting and had been forgotten many many times). But since the sock actually fits perfectly, I decided just to keep them & wear them as ankle socks. Since they are summer socks (cotton/wool blend) ankle socks are fine. I don't like high socks anyway.

Made out of magic stripes yarn on size 2 needles, 56 stitches I believe I used. I added a solid blue after the heel turn here & there because I realized I needed more yarn to make the socks as high up my leg as what I wanted. Notice I don't have my socks matching - I prefer fraternal twins, thank you very much.

I'll make magic stripes yarn with constrasting heels & toes from now on - which is what I'm doing with my current magic stripes socks. I think I'm using 54 stitches right now for the current magic stripes socks.

this last pair was a sock of the month kit from theknitter.com. I made them using size 3 needles & a stretchy cotton sock yarn that was fun to work with, a little more textured than other stretch cotton sock yarns. It was fun & fast to do - I think I finished these babies in a week or so, and that's fast for me!

I'm so glad this past year is over. I don't normally talk too personally in my blogs, but the past year really wasn't all that bad, in fact, as far as my marriage is concerned, it was the best year yet. Still, all in all, I'm always glad when another year is over.

I have been busy knitting socks! I finished my leftover socks in blue, and they are t-i-g-h-t, but wearable. Just hard to get off my feet! And I've been busy knitting my cloverleaf socks, they've been a WIP since the summer, but I'm on the home front now. I did the heel turn, & about 3 pattern repeats above the heel now. I'm planning on doing another 3 or 4 pattern repeats (6 rows in a pattern) and then I'll continue the ribbing pattern without the lace part for an inch or so, and then switch to k1, p1 ribbing or k2, p1 ribbing for an inch or so, and be done with them. They'll be short socks, but that's okay. I just want to finish these socks!!

I got the knitting pattern a day calender for Christmas, there are sock patterns in there! Oh happy day! I did get a new sock book for Christmas, the one called Socks in the shape of a sock. Good patterns in there, in fact I started woolease slipper socks based off a pattern in that book. K2, p2 across, and then k across the next row. Easy, simple socks.

Also cast on 2 more socks to round out my sock making so I have 4 socks on needles: one is another colorway of magic stripes on size 2 needles, and the other is out of an elann sock colorway in red, blue, and green. I only have 1 ball of it, so I'm using a bit of leftover red for the toe, a bit of leftover blue for the heel, the little bit of red I have left for the top of the heel, and I think I'll throw in some leftover red, yellow, & blue elann sock yarn for a bit to make the yarn stretch some more, and to brighten up the colorway a bit. I love the red, blue, and green colors, but I like a little more splash to them, I think. Right now they are all plain knitting, but after the heels I may do something else, I haven't decided yet.

I picked up more Magic Stripes yarn yesterday at ACMoore with my gift card from my sister in law for Christmas. 3 balls of the same colorway, don't remember the name but it's one of the striped colorways, in light blues & greens... a colorway I didn't have yet. DH wants a pair & so do I, so I bought 3 balls. I figure 1.5 balls for him (he was very wide & short feet, but he likes tall socks, so 1.5 balls for him) and I'll need just over a ball myself, unless I find a solid blue that I like to match for heels & toes... I'm trying not to order any more sock yarn until I finish up some socks, so that might not happen. I am discovering though, I really like constrasting color heels & toes!

It’s hard to find anyone whose life has not been touched by breast cancer. After the success of Celebrity Scarves, which benefited AIDS research, we are hard at work on a second volume dedicated to knitting for a breast-cancer cure. Already, actors David Arquette and Kristen Davis, among others, are working on their scarves (this time the theme is pink) as we join with Avon to raise both funds for and awareness of this terrible disease. But you don’t have to be a celebrity to make a difference. We know there are many of you who would relish the chance to design for this worthy cause as well, so Vogue Knitting has teamed up with Book of the Month Club to sponsor a Scarf for Breast Cancer contest for our readers. We ask that scarves incorporate at least a little pink, and we encourage you to be as creative as possible with your original design. Three Grand Prize winners and ten runners-up will be chosen.

It's a generic explanation based on her sock project, so according the # of sts she had on needles. Some indications are given for different sizes.
ATTENTION: The directions are done for knitting on 2 circular needles, placed in 'profile mode'. And wrapped sts are worked as regular sts. The wraps form a nice ridge.
'I won't mention right or left directions. I'm a strong leftie and work from left to right. But socks are done in the round and are symmetrical. Working on 68 sts, heel will be done on 34 sts. Start the heel flap at beg of a new row. You'll work it with just one circ needle. If you prefer, you can work it using 2 DPNs. See I use ratio instead of measurements:

52 sts - 8 or 10 rows flap
56 - 10 or 12 rows flap
60 - 12 rows flap
64 - 12/14 rows flap
68 - 14 rows flap

68 is your #, and you will work the flap on 34 sts. At beg of a new round, K34. WS: P34 Repeat until you have 12 rows of st st, finishing on a WS row. Start the short rows shaping: I leave 8 sts in middle. I think you should leave 10 sts 'cause your gauge is smaller than mine. 34 - 10 = 24/2 = 12 sts This way, short rows will be done on each block of 12 sts of the flap edges.

Row 1 (RS): slip 1 knitwise, K21, wrap & and turn (or turn & wrap)
Row 2 WS): slip the wrapped st purlwise, P10, W&T
Row 3 (RS): slip the wrapped st knitwise, K until the wrapped st of previous row, W&T
Row 4 (WS): slip the wrapped st purlwise, K until the wrapped st of previous row, W&T.

Continue this way until you had work and wrap all the sts, finishing on a RS row. The last wrapped st on edge will be worked only at first row in the round. I rather thought I posted about them but I don't see an entry anywhere. Hmm, strange. I don't even remember when I finished them, a couple of weeks ago? They've been living on my feet.

Overall they fit good. THe heel especially fits well. One thing I should have done is increase a little - the ribbing stretches well, but the socks don't stay up on my leg as well as they should, and I think it's because I could have increased a bit.

I've been working on my Magic Stripes socks that I started a few months ago, the color is demin stripes. I realized after the heel turn how low on yarn I was, so I added a solid color blue that matches the blue in the socks almost perfectly. I'm adding in a few rows of the solid color blue every now and then in between the main Magic Stripes yarn, to make the yarn go farther. I do toe up socks only, so when I run out of Magic Stripes, I'll finish the socks with the solid blue in ribbing, or maybe I'll start the ribbing with the Magic Stripes when I know I'm getting really close to the end. So far, I've got about five inches above the bottom of the foot knit. I usually like shorter socks but because Magic Stripes is a little thicker than regular sock yarn, I really would like these to be heavy duty, keep my feet warm socks - so, I'm hoping to stretch out my yarn & get at least 7", 8" would make me happier but I think unless I want to use a lot of that solid blue, I won't get to 8". I've never used up all of my yarn to make a pair of socks, so this is a bit weird for me, using more than my 100 grams & then some.

Let's see, it's been quite some time since I've actually finished a pair of socks, though I have an astonding (for me) 7 pairs of socks on needles. I did finish my Opal socks started forever ago, and they are beautiful & I love wearing them.

The last couple of weekends I've done some sock yarn shopping. I went to Webs & Northampton Wools, both in Northampton, and spent $60 between both places, mostly on Regia. Then two weekends ago we went to the Cape & stopped at a yarn store & bought some solid color sock yarn (the brand escapes me at the moment) to use with some leftovers socks that I'm making/will make.

I've loved being in both, but haven't made one sock from either club yet. I'm just now getting to the point where I can actually make the socks, but I always have to convert the patterns to toe up anyway. There are so many free patterns on the 'net, or I have so many ideas for socks in my head, that it seems a waste to spend the money on yarn+a pattern that'll sit in a box for a year waiting for me to make, when money is already so tight.

Goodness, I haven't been around in quite some time. Our computer has definitely been acting up, and work is just so crazy, I'm exhausted by the time I come home at night. And the fact that it takes our computer 30+ minutes to boot up, doesn't help matters any. Yes, we have computer problems!

I've been busy knitting socks. Let's see, I'm working on a pair of lovely Opal socks in a Brasil colorway - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black & white. I love them! They are the first pair of Opal socks I've actually made, and have 4 skeins of Opal yarn in my stash. Definitely must make more Opal socks! These baby are straight st st on size 1 needles, 56 stitches around. Toe up, of course. I just finished the heel turn, and have done maybe 1.5" past that. I do both socks at the same time on dpn, all my socks are made that way.

I'm also making a pair of 2 by 2 ribbed socks using a blue-green Sockotta colorway. Also 56 stitches, using size 1 needles. These are my "make while I'm on my lunch break at work" socks, so they are coming along very slowly. I knit slow to begin with. A good week of work knitting, is maybe 1.5" of knitting!

I'm also making a pair of Crazy 8's socks - you know, the leftover sock pattern. I adore this pattern, and I'm making it with blue leftovers. My "wild" color has purple in it. IT's slow going, as I only work on them when I'm awake & have time to knit 16 rows in one sitting - 8 rows on each sock in the same color, so I won't forget where I am in the socks or what color I used. And since I knit slow...

Let's see, what other socks am I making? I'm making a pair out of the Smiley's sockyarn, the Italian yarn that always slips my mind... C something... Cervinia Calzetteria (I looked it up). I'm still increasing for the toe on both socks, using size 2 needles. If I had size 1.5, I'd use those - 2 isn't giving me quite the gauge I want, and using size 1's with this sock yarn hurts my hands. I think this yarn is a little heavier than fingering weight. I'm using a blue/green colorway. Can you tell what my favorite colors are? Hmm.

I picked up at Salvation Army on Saturday a TON of vintage sock yarn, different brands/blends (a lot of 50% wool, 50% nylon, some 100% nylon, some 100% wool) but all the same weight - it was marked 50 cents each, and was 50% off! I bought every skein they had, including some skeins that weren't quite full. Figuring an average of 3.5 oz per pair of socks, I have enough vintage yarn to make 12 pairs of socks!! what a steal! I'm very excited about it. Now, mind you, these socks will be wild... mostly blues or pastel colors, with some oranges, one skein of red, and one of brown. But, I'm a wild gal to begin with. My practice swatching so far is giving me 10 spi on size 0's. I didn't like the look on size 1's at all, even though my gauge was awfully close - 9 spi.

My question is, can I freely mix the 100% nylon yarn with the 100% wool yarn & the blends? I was thinking of maybe using the 100% nylon yarn just for the heels/toes, and using everything else freely.

Not much else for knitting news, though I did pick up FC Easy Knitting & the Vogue Knitting magazines this weekend, and also got Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of pattern stitches for 50 cents at a yard sale :). What a find! I'm already starting a top from the Vogue Knitting magazines, I think it's the easiest pattern in the magazine, but other than my shawl that will never end, it's the first non-socks pattern I'm attempting to make. and congrats to the winners of the 2004 Boston Marathon! Since Jon had to go into work today, we didn't go to the marathon (my parents did) but Jon & I watched it all on TV. I'll post my entry here & in my crochet blog, and I'll be off to finish knitting my:

broadripple socks. Here's Zorro helping me to try them on. Both socks are finished at this point, and I'm about to switch to the garter pattern, or whatever it's called :/. I don't have quite enough yarn to finish a pair for me & a matching pair for Jon & I, since I goofed on the heels & made the heels with my main color instead of my solid color that matched. :( I could have frogged, but didn't care about it enough to frog it. They are, after all, only socks, and a very quick knit at that. So, Jon's will have solid color toes & heels, and since his feet are the same size as mine, but much wider, with a big heel, he'll use the majority of the yarn. I also want to TRY to have enough leftovers of this yarn to make a pair of booties/ankles (the pom pom pattern from magknits), even if I have to stripe the variaged with the solid, I should be able to do it.

Okay, enough babbling! Here's another picture of the socks:

I got a couple of inches done on my broadripple socks - I'm definitely liking them, but they still look too big! I'm plugging away on them though, and trusting my gauge.

I also worked on my shawl for an inch or so. I'm getting really bored with it, but, I'll be glad for another shawl, and this baby will be great for those nights we have a campfire at my parents' house, or any other time I just want something thrown around my shoulders, and I want warmth, not necessarily a beautiful work of art. Then again, who says we can't have it both ways???

I worked on them some last night, as well, and was knitting right along on the pattern. I kept stopping to admire my ripple, but the sock was just huge. I know everyone on the list has been saying that it looks huge for the first few inches of pattern, but this baby was huge, even for my husband, who is getting this pair.

Since I make my socks toe up, always, I never really worry about gauge. I just increase until the sock fits. But, I decided to check my gauge, and well, I was wildy off... I mean, wildy off... no wonder my socks were huge! Down to a size 2 needle I went, unfortunately I have very very few nu. 2's lying around, but I scrambled & found enough to start these babies all over again. Just the toes of one pair is done, and the beginning of the other toes (I do both socks at the same time on DPN's), but these are looking MUCH better, and the fabric is definitely looking a lot better, too.

Also today, new template! Yeah! It took me longer to find a knitting template then it did for me to do the changes, but, the ad at the top looks really weird, and I can't figure out how to fix it. Anyone out there know what to do? Knowing I have very basic html skills?

He's such a part of me, that I can't believe I haven't mentioned him! Here's an old picture of Zorro, but I just love it:

You can tell he loves the yarn as much as I do!! A ring about kitties & knitting? I'm so there :). I need to join some knitting rings, anyway.

Not much actual knitting news to report. I, very sadly, forgot to take socks with me to day :( and at home, I've been working on a pair of crocheted socks. I certainly haven't had time to knit that shawl, either! However, I did get my big old box of sock yarn I ordered last week :) and yesterday got my sock of the month from theknitter.com - lovely purple cotton yarn in a lace pattern, perfect for my mom! I'd love to do these for her for mother's day, but it aint gonna happen. I'm way too slow of a knitter for that.

I am enjoying the shawl, though it's not fancy yarn or fancy stitches. It's just really nice to knit something non sock related!

I'm doing the very very basic & easy, garter stitch shawl. I already have 2 crocheted shawls, one out of mohair & very long & big, and the other one is much shorter, smaller, and is more of a fashion thing - it's made out of reds, oranges, and yellows & is all about color & not too much about warmth.
So this shawl is made out of a forest green worstened weight yarn out of my stash - trying to de-stash, you know, even though I'm ordering more sock yarn tomorrow - and, I'm plugging along on it. I was planning on knitting on it this morning before I leave to go to work, but decided to work on d/l mail (I'm on a slow connection so it takes forever every day) & updating this blog. I don't want to forget to up date this one, like I did my old crochet one!!

One of my finished fixation socks - cascade fixation, that is.
